Study of Machine Safety during Interventions in Reduced Speed or Force Mode

Abstract

Accessibility to moving parts is the cause of one fourth of the accidents associated with industrial machines. The statutes stipulate that access to moving parts must be possible only under certain well-defined conditions. In particular, hazardous components must operate only under conditions of increased safety, for example at reduced speed or force. However, the reduced speed and force values are not known.

At the request of the CSST, the researchers will produce a knowledge summary on the conditions surrounding this mode of operation, mainly by documenting the different reduced speed and force values found in the literature. Also, they will analyze 20 interventions in companies, on four types of machines (robots, printing presses, machining tools, and paper or board machines), in order to better understand and characterize the types of interventions that use these methods, as well as the means of protection recommended in the literature and used in the field.
