Impact of physiological drift on workload measurement

Abstract

In ergonomics, the measurement of energy expenditure is a preferred method of determining the physical demands of a job. But since it requires costly, cumbersome equipment, ergonomists usually use estimates taken from energy cost tables and established using relationships between heart rate (HR) and oxygen consumption (VO2). These relationships have been determined in the laboratory, under conditions that may vary considerably from the reality in the field. In addition, as the work day progresses, various natural phenomena, including fatigue, and factors such as thermal environment may increase heart rate and consequently alter the HR -V02 relationship.
The researcher will study the reliability of this relationship based on the time of day and different work conditions. This research will lead to a better understanding of the limits of this procedure in evaluating energy expenditure. The knowledge gained from this study will make it possible to better monitor ergonomic evaluations in the workplace.
