IRSST - Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail

1995: Industry leader

LATR

The IRSST’s status as an industry leader in repetitive strain injury (RSI) research was confirmed with the publication of an exhaustive reference work on the topic, and with the organization, in Montréal, of the Second International Scientific Conference on the Prevention of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (PREMUS 95), which drew 500 researchers and practitioners from around 20 countries. The CSST and its prevention network called on the Institute’s expertise to carry out five pilot projects on the prevention of this type of injury in the workplace.

The magazine L’IRSST and that of the CSST, Prévention au travail, were merged to better reflect the complementary missions and activities of both organizations. The merged magazine, encourages workplace management of health and safety and prevention initiatives by presenting examples of practical solutions, company profiles and research results.

Evaluating laceration and puncture resistance

TDM 100

The IRSST made a major breakthrough in protective equipment research by developing an avant-garde test method for evaluating the aceration and puncture resistance of the materials used in manufacturing protective gloves. Earning international recognition, this reliable method makes it possible to determine the level of laceration and puncture resistance of various materials and to classify the materials according to their effectiveness. The test bed prototype led to the development and commercialization of the TDM-100 tomodynamometer.

Alternatives to solvents

For the first time in the world, an IRSST-funded research team from Université de Montréal, proposed alternative solutions for replacing solvents used in industry. The eight most common uses made of toxic solvents were identified through a field survey, followed by a literature review on these solvents. In addition to proposing possible alternatives, the research report provided examples taken from 260 concrete cases.
