Video on Preventive Knowledge of Lobster Boat Crews

Abstract

The video Setting the Course for Safety: Preventing Falls Overboard comes out of scientific research carried out over the past years by Université Laval and Merinov on preventing lobster fishers from falling overboard. The research was funded by the IRSST, at the request of the Commission des normes, de l’équité et de la santé et sécurité au travail (CNESST).

The research made it possible to identify some forty prevention strategies and the preventive knowledge developed by professional lobster fishers. The researchers and members of the follow-up committee chose the most effective strategies. They are featured in the video, which aims to raise the awareness of fishing crews to the prevention mechanisms implemented by those in their industry.

Filmed on board fishing vessels from the Gaspé and the Magdalen Islands, the video shows fishers and deckhands performing their tasks, explaining their work and sharing their preventive strategies and “tricks of the trade” for avoiding falls overboard.
