Development, validation and application of a control banding model for selecting reparatory protection against bioaerosols

Abstract

The hazards associated with exposure to bioaerosols have generated considerable interest among persons involved in occupational health and safety. Selecting and using adequate respiratory protection is a decision of crucial importance for the health of workers exposed to such bioaerosols.
The IRSST has published a guide on respiratory protection against bioaerosols. It aims to provide guidance on selecting respiratory protective devices (RPDs) for use in a range of hazardous situations to which workers in various industries may be exposed, in particular in hospital centres, household waste sorting centres and waste water treatment plants.
This study completes the work begun by the guide by proposing to create a control banding model for selecting the RPDs necessary to ensure adequate respiratory protection against infectious and non-infectious bioaerosols.
