New, Improved Edition of the Best Practices Guide to Synthetic Nanoparticle Risk Management

Abstract

The IRSST published the first edition of its Guide de bonnes pratiques favorisant la gestion des risques liés aux nanoparticules de synthèse in 2008. It provided an overview of scientific knowledge in the field at that time. New research since then has expanded the knowledge base of nanoparticle (NP) health risks, the effectiveness of collective and individual means of risk prevention, and organizational handling of products containing NPs.
The best practices guide was updated and improved to ensure the safe manufacture and use of synthetic NPs. Four steps were involved: conduct a review of the literature; choose and tour organizations and research laboratories that handle NPs in order to document work practices, prevention measures and level of occupational exposure; interpret the tour findings; and draft the best practices guide. The guide will help manage and prevent the risks associated with the handling of NPs in various work environments.
