Developing design criteria for wheel chocks for retaining trucks and semi-trailers on transfer platforms

Abstract

Every year, transfer platforms are the site of numerous serious accidents involving lift trucks, mainly caused by the unexpected starting of a truck or semi-trailer, or by it moving forward. While the market already offers many different wheel chocks, previous tests have shown that the majority of them contribute little to the avoidance of such accidents. This study involves defining the design criteria for manual wheel chocks under various field conditions. It will lead to recommendations being formulated about their manufacture, configuration, number and location. Companies will then be better able to select the wheel chocks appropriate for their activities. Should no existing product correspond to the specified criteria, the research report can serve as a reference model in manufacturing a new model.
