The relational approach to care to prevent caregivers’ health problems and to improve the quality of services: analysis of the implementation in CHSLDs (residential and long-term care centres)

Abstract

Given the increase in their clientele, residential and long-term care centres (CHSLD) are looking for innovative ways of providing quality services to their residents, while reducing the health and safety risks for their personnel. The relational approach to care (ARS), designed to prevent psychological stress and physical exertion among caregivers, has been established in many of these establishments for a few years. This exploratory research will review the introduction of this approach and determine the characteristics of the training, implementation steps and work and organizational conditions that are, or are not, favourable to this approach, and then explore the impact of its implementation on CHSLD residents and their caregivers.
