Definition of the OHS issue in subway driving and the possibilities of redesigning driving cabs: exploratory study

Abstract

Montréal subway cabs brought into service in the 1970s have seats of rudimentary design that do not attenuate vibration. The current study, which is part of a 3-study program, includes an initial component whose aim is a better identification of subway operators’ health and safety issues. Questionnaires administered to all of the operators and a study of company data have situated the health and safety problems of operators and the main work-related constraints. The second component of the study focuses on the possibility of improving train cabs. Analysis of the work, and simulations on computer and on full-size mockup with the help of a working group have led to modifications being proposed for increasing the space inside the cab, and to criteria being defined on how to choose and where to position a new seat.
