Retail sales – Phase II: Detailed ergonomic analysis in three superstores

Abstract

Despite the few studies on the subject, the analysis of statistical data on occupational injuries, the scientific literature and the researchers’ knowledge target superstores as being particularly at risk for musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), mainly low back pain. This project follows research carried out in a large chain’s warehouse store, which produced a diagnostic model describing the main work components that are the cause of handlers’ physical and psychosocial risk factors. This second project aims to enhance this model in order to identify aspects specific to each type of store and those that can be generalized to businesses in this category. The result will be an exhaustive summary of the work determinants that result in risks to workers, and the proposal of solution scenarios adapted to this sector, separate from industry. From this knowledge, which is essential in initiating MSD prevention in this field, a practical guide can be produced for occupational health and safety professionals.
