Production of a monograph on industrial solvents

Abstract

At present, approximately 140,000 tonnes of industrial solvents are consumed in Quebec. Used in various occupations for dissolving, degreasing, cleaning, stripping, extracting and diluting, solvents are hazardous to workers, exerting toxic effects on the skin, nervous system, liver, kidneys, blood, and reproductive system, and on development. Furthermore, certain solvents may constitute fire or explosive hazards. Due to environmental regulations, significant changes are presently underway regarding the use of solvents. Furthermore, in many cases the properties of new product and processes appearing on the market are unknown. Along with an update of information regarding these aspects, this monograph will include a large section on substitution. It will also discuss other dimensions of prevention such as ventilation, personal protection, material safety data sheets and fire protection.
