Development of OHS Performance Measurement Tools for Manufacturing Companies Organized into Semi-Autonomous Work Teams

Abstract

The authors of this publication raise the issues of occupational health and safety measurement. They observe that it might be counterproductive to measure OHS performance based on accident frequency and severity indicators, which demonstrate reality only partially and often inaccurately. Consequently, they propose a new approach for measuring OHS performance that allows organizations to act before events occur and to highlight the hazardous processes, systems and behaviours. They present a classification of the types (reactive and proactive measurements) of measuring tools used in OHS, as well as the categories of subjects measured.
Also presented is the preliminary version of a self-diagnostic questionnaire based on the predictive values that they intend to validate over the short term in the field. The proposed approach and the future tool will allow companies, regardless of their means of organization, to enhance their OHS management guidelines while acquiring a prevention apprenticeship culture that favors and promotes the identification of potentially hazardous situations.
