Study of musculoskeletal upper limb injuries caused by repetitive work in pig slaughterhouses

Abstract

Workers in pork slaughterhouses suffer musculoskeletal injuries to the upper limbs as a result of performing repetitive work. This project is part of a ongoing process undertaken by the IRSST at the request of management and labour at three pork slaughterhouses. Its principal objectives were to clarify the influence of several factors - including repetitivity, workstation layout, tool design, and work practices - on musculoskeletal strain in the upper limbs, and to propose and plan modifications designed to prevent the appearance of these injuries.

Workstations identified as problematic by the health and safety committees of the slaughterhouses were analyzed ergonomically, and work activities associated with them studied, with the collaboration of the health and safety committees.

This study will elucidate the effects of various factors on musculoskeletal strain in the upper limbs, and lead to improvements in the workstations studied. An intervention strategy for the prevention of musculoskeletal injuries to the upper limbs will also be developed.
