Ventilation and air quality of office buildings

Abstract

At the request of the Association paritaire pour la santé et la sécurité du travail - Secteur administration provinciale (Joint Occupational Health and Safety Association - Provincial Civil Service Sector), the IRSST studied air quality problems in three buildings, identified sources of common problems, and proposed measures to reduce or eliminate them.

Following a questionnaire study of occupants' perception of air quality and ventilation system effectiveness, the study examined air quality, comfort indices and ventilation systems. This preliminary study was followed by similar studies, in collaboration with the Société Immobilière du Québec (Québec Real Estate Association) in 17 buildings. Chemical contaminants, bioaerosols, and the work environment were also studied.

The results of all the studies were compiled and published as a guide entitled "Stratégie d'étude de la qualité de l'air dans les édifices à bureaux" ("Air quality survey strategy for office buildings"). Reports containing specific results and recommendations were produced for each of the buildings studied.
