Concerns of some manufacturing companies about health and safety management in workplaces structured around semi-autonomous work

Abstract

Many companies have structured their production around semi-autonomous work groups as this form of work organisation offers competitive advantages. At the same time, however, it modifies the traditional distribution of functions and roles and requires new approaches to the management of health and safety. This pilot project will shed new light on the effects of this type of work organisation on the management of health and safety activities, the distribution of responsibilities, and the adoption of prevention-oriented behaviours. The needs, expectations, and concerns of the principal health and safety stakeholders in ten manufacturing companies using this type of work organisation will be characterised.
