Health, safety, and organization of home-care work Abstract Home-care work is a hazardous profession, regardless of workers' age. A pilot study was conducted at a CLSC to identify the ultimate causes of the hazards associated with home care, analyse coping strategies, identify age- and experience-specific variations in coping strategies, and develop research hypotheses. An interdisciplinary approach drawing on multiple data sources was adopted; the primary data source was observation of work. This broad approach allowed identification of several organisational and environmental risk factors and demonstrated the importance of practical, experienced-based, know-how in coping with stressors and reducing the effect of hazards. In collaboration with an advisory committee, intervention-oriented recommendations were formulated.
