Development of a method for the simultaneous determination of isocyanate monomers and oligomers in workplace air

Abstract

Isocyanates are recognized causes of occupational asthma. They may be present in either monomeric or oligomeric form, and are an important component of automobile paints. The IRSST has developed a method with which to measure the level of isocyanate monomers in workplace air, but evaluation of respiratory and cutaneous absorption of isocyanate oligomers requires the development of adequate analytical techniques for air and contaminated surfaces. This project will develop a method for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of isocyanate monomers and oligomers in air and on contaminated surfaces, and thereby help prevent hazardous exposures.
