Carcinogens in Dentistry: Better Understanding for Better Protection

A team of scientists from the IRSST, McGill University and the University of British Columbia is currently carrying out a study to identify the potential carcinogens present in dental clinics and laboratories. The objective? To develop a practical manual to better prevent and manage the risks of exposure for workers in the sector.

1. Better understanding the risk of exposure

Every day, people working in dentistry use a wide variety of products and materials they need to do their jobs. Some of these products are known to be potentially carcinogenic for humans. Better understanding exposure to these products is essential to develop preventive strategies that are adapted to the reality on the ground.

2. Providing a concrete preventive tool

This study is intended to document the work situations, products used and occupational exposure that can occur in dental clinics and laboratories, with the aim of providing a practical manual to support the management and prevention of exposure to carcinogens.

  • A concise, clear guide, focused on essentials;
  • A presentation of arcinogens based on work tasks and contexts;
  • Concrete solutions to prevent or reduce exposure.

3. Teaming up with workplaces

The IRSST invites dental clinics and laboratories to participate in this study.

This initiative targets all dental professionals, including dentists, denturists, dental hygienists and assistants, and technical, administrative and support staff.

By taking part in this study, you will contribute to a better understanding of the risks associated with certain tasks and help us develop concrete solutions to improve prevention – and make your workplace safer.
