Development of a contaminant index for diesel exhaust

Abstract

A significant proportion of the Québec work force is exposed to diesel exhaust. The particulate matter in such exhaust, particularly soot, may be a source of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Other major contaminants to which exposure may occur include unburnt heavy and light hydrocarbons, and combustion products such as nitrogen oxides, oxidized hydrocarbons, sulphur oxides, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide.

This project investigated the use of carbon dioxide as a proxy measure of the level of diesel exhaust contamination in bus garages and in staff rooms used by bus drivers.
