Exposure assessment for tool-induced vibration : Validation of a measurement technique

Abstract

The measurement technique currently used to characterize and quantify hand-arm vibration, based on ISO standard 5349, does not discriminate between the various categories of vibrating tools and hand-held equipment. This can lead to difficulties in adequately evaluating exposure, since differences in the source and nature of the vibration can require modifications in the choice of accelerometer, the axes of measurement, the location of the sensor on the tool, the manner in which the sensor is attached to the tool, and the duration of the measurements.

In light of this situation, this project developed a detailed measurement protocol for the analysis and recording of hand-arm vibration generated by different types of tools and machines used in the workplace. The technique was validated in laboratory and field studies.
