Abstract

The trade of floor-covering installer is a demanding one, not only physically (handling of very heavy rolls of material, kneeling for long periods, spreading glue over large areas), but also in terms of skills. Installing is precision work, and with hard-wearing materials, the slightest defect shows. In addition, installers often have to work under sometimes difficult conditions (e.g., heat, restricted traffic areas, tight project deadlines). As a result, the risks of developing musculoskeletal disorders of the knees, back, shoulders, hands, wrists and ankles are high.

The study Solutions visant l’amélioration des conditions de santé et de sécurité chez les poseurs de revêtements de sols [Solutions to improve the health and safety conditions of floor-covering installers] (2013-0035) identified preventive solutions that had a good chance of being implemented and that would have a positive impact on the health and safety of workers in the trade. In their conclusions, the researchers highlight prevention initiatives that focus on improving certain types of equipment, tools and work methods. These solutions are not easy to implement, however, owing to a host of factors related to the players in the sector and the structure of the industry, made up of a large number of small businesses.

The purpose of this knowledge transfer activity is to make a video that will raise the OHS awareness of floor-covering installers, business owners, retailers, suppliers and customers.
