Validity of multisectoral job-exposure matrices

Abstract

Currently, there are no generally applicable tools with which to describe potential occupational exposures to toxic substances in multiple sectors or trades. This project was undertaken to facilitate the identification of toxic substances in the workplace. A standard database was established, using data from 20 000 exposure measurements gathered between 1981 and 1989 in the territory of a department of community health in the Montréal area. The data comparison phase is under way, and job-exposure matrices and databases for the same jobs and industries have been obtained from other countries.

Over the long term, this project will result in the development of a specific Québec job-exposure matrix indicating the association between individual jobs and actual occupational exposure to toxic substances. Both industrial hygienists and occupational physicians responsible for the development of enterprise-specific health programmes will find this matrix useful.
