Underlying theory and implementation of the program for safe transfer of patients

Abstract

In collaboration with the Association sectorielle pour la santé et la sécurité du travail du secteur des affaires sociales (ASSTSAS), the researchers will evaluate the Safe Patient-Transfer Program, established since 1985 in Québec’s health care institutions to prevent back pain in care-giving personnel. The first goal of this two-phase study is to describe the program’s underlying theory, to document its implementation, and to inventory the other musculoskeletal injury prevention interventions implemented in these institutions. In addition to laying the groundwork for the second phase of the study, the results of this work will provide any interested organization with in-depth knowledge of the components of such a program and facilitate the monitoring of its implementation. These aspects will then be used in defining the expected effects of the program, in creating a valid measuring tool, in identifying the links between these effects and the training given in the workplace, as well as in estimating the relationship between the program’s costs and benefits.
