Study of emissions generated by secondary treatment of pulp and paper plant secondary effluents

Abstract

In order to comply with new environmental regulations concerning the toxicity of industrial effluents, Québec pulp and paper plants have installed secondary effluent-treatment systems, which rely on microorganisms to transform wastewater pollutants into more stable by-products and residual sludges. The use of such systems has caused some concern and elicited complaints from workers and local residents about foul odours and atmospheric emissions of chemicals and microorganisms, all subjects on which there is little data. This study, conducted in 11 plants, identified and quantified the main chemicals, unpleasant odours and microorganisms emitted by various processes, defined quality-control indicators that can be used by health and safety specialists to monitor air quality, and proposed corrective measures. An advisory committee comprising employer, union and governmental representatives facilitated interaction between researchers, stakeholders and prevention specialists.
