Social models of occupational health and safety and their impact on the management of technological and organisational change

Abstract

Employers' and workers' have different conceptual models of occupational health and safety, particularly with regard to the nature of hazards, causes of injuries, solutions, management of prevention, and responsibilities and participation of various stakeholders. These differences, which are exacerbated by technological or organisational change, are reflected in each group's attitudes and behaviours and influence the ability to develop a truly prevention-oriented corporate culture. A projected study will compare the management strategies that are most effective in minimising the negative impact of technological and organisational change on health and safety in various industrial sectors. However, it appeared essential to first characterise the role conceptual differences may play in this context. This preliminary study will therefore establish a sampling strategy, define the sampling frame, and develop data collection and analysis tools related to conceptual models to be used in the larger study.
