Silicon carbide and lung cancer Abstract The production of silicon carbide is know to generate contaminants suspected of affecting the incidence of lung cancer in exposed workers. This project, incorporating retrospective cohort and case-control studies, will determine whether workers exposed to silicon carbide exhibit excess lung cancer mortality compared to unexposed individuals. The relation between exposure to respirable particles emitted during silicon carbide production and the incidence of lung cancer will also be analyzed. The information on workers' reaction to their exposure which this project will provide will facilitate the establishment of exposure standards which adequately protect workers.
