Rehabilitation of workers having suffered back injuries: evaluation and correction of muscle weakness and fatigue

Abstract

Although weakness and fatigue of the trunk muscles are associated with the develop of chronic back disorders. no protocol exists for the simple and reliable evaluation of these two types of muscle dysfunction. To remedy this situation, this project will develop an evaluation protocol using data from surface electromyography from subjects suffering from back disorders and healthy subjects. This protocol, when combined with clinical measures of pain, incapacity, and health status, will facilitate the identification of patients in obvious need of rehabilitation. The final, documented, protocol could be used to evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitative interventions designed to reduce muscle weakness and fatigue.
