Quality control of fibre-counting: Extension of the inter-laboratory exchange program

Abstract

Occupational exposure to fibres is quantified by microscope-based fibre-counting techniques. As this type of analysis is not automated, and therefore, performed by humans (counters), it involves a certain degree of subjective error. A rigorous inter-laboratory quality control program can however help limit the extent of this error. Under the IRSST's program, established in 1992, representative samples taken in Quebec workplaces are submitted to counters for evaluation. The Institute plans to extend its quality control program to more counters and ensure that its samples are sufficiently numerous and variable. By consolidating its role as a reference institution, the Institute will improve the quality of support offered to users. Furthermore, widespread harmonization of counting techniques will improve the reliability of the analyses, which will in turn translate into more effective environmental monitoring of workplaces.
