Project management and safety in the construction sector

Abstract

This study was undertaken to determine whether the adoption of a Total Quality approach to construction project design reduces hazards and accidents.

The project will study eight to twelve completed construction projects for which sufficient statistical data on accident frequency and severity is available. Interviews will be conducted with management, designers, managers, and unions to determine the importance accorded to Total Quality in project management.

The existence of a relation between the Total Quality approach and construction accidents will be determined, and should such a relation exist, its nature and main characteristics will be identified.
