Prevalence of chronic bronchitis in Montréal foundry workers Abstract A Finnish study has demonstrated an increased number of cases of chronic bronchitis among smelter workers. This study was undertaken to determine whether a similar situation exists in Québec.Pulmonary function was measured in 524 workers exposed to metal smelting in six Montréal-area foundries of various sizes. Results were compared to those a control group composed of 100 unexposed workers, and the effects of occupational and lifestyle factors analyzed. The study confirmed the existence of an elevated number of cases of bronchial obstruction among exposed workers, particularly among smokers and ex-smokers. The size of the smelter was not a significant factor. The importance of alerting workers who smoke to the significant health risks posed by their work environment was underlined. The implementation of control measures and the promotion of smoking cessation are recommended.
