Important health and safety considerations in domestic waste sorting and composting facilities

Abstract

In Québec, concerns about waste disposal have led to the construction of domestic waste sorting and composting facilities, several of which are already in operation. The soal of this project was to document chemical, biological, physical, and ergonomic risk factors for occupational injury in existing facilities. Sampling results indicated that the mean total bacteria concentration exceeded guidelines in the receiving area and fermentation buildings. In one the two facilities studied, the concentration of some chemical contaminants exceeded 50% of their exposure limit. However, only low concentrations of Gram-negative bacteria, the most dangerous type, were observed. Appropriate corrective measures were applied.
