GLOBAL: Overall evaluation of the risks related to the transport and storing of hazardous materials

Abstract

Industrial activity requires that hazardous materials (HMs) be manufactured and used but also that they be transported between fixed installations. These materials therefore represent major risks on industrial sites, as well as between these sites due to their transportation, not only for workers, but also for the population and the environment.

This project was carried out in collaboration with several partners, and identified the OHS issues for companies using HMs. These issues can be of three different types: economic, social and legal. An investigation on a sample of Québec companies using HMs led to an analysis of the logistical strategies to reduce HM-related risks and to promote sustainable development concepts.
