Factors responsible for the frequency and severity of road accidents involving professional drivers in Québec Abstract Accidents involving truckers and bus drivers account for a large proportion of fatal occupational accidents. No detailed analyses of the factors responsible for the frequency and severity of these accidents are however available. This project was undertaken to fill this knowledge gap.The project will measure the relative importance of various factors associated with accidents, and evaluate the effect on accidents and infractions of health-related factors such as diabetes and hypertension, socio-economic factors such as age and income, exposure-related risk factors (hours worked, accumulated distance), and the degree of experience. The results of this project will be used to establish whether current medical and optometrical driving standards can be justified from the point of view of statistics, and characterize the effect of work conditions and experience on accidents. They may also prove useful in the development of policies and standards related to road safety.
