Experimental asbestosis : indicators of pulmonary and systemic progression

Abstract

This study continues previous work concerned with the early diagnosis of asbestosis, and uses the experimental model previously developed (RS-79-10). The current work investigates the progression of asbestosis, and early indicators of the disease.

Experimental work involved the examination and analysis of pulmonary tissue and blood samples. This was complemented by an analysis of thoracic x-rays of asbestos workers.

The following effects were observed following exposure to asbestos dust: proliferation of cells of the blood and pulmonary defense systems (lymphocytes, macrophages), inflammation, reduction of pulmonary compliance, development of pulmonary opacities.

Biochemical markers are useful for the early detection of asbestosis. The results indicate the need for further research on the roles of pulmonary clearance and fibre retention. The IRSST has funded further research (RS-83-03) dealing with other early detection techniques, and with the effect of respiratory tract filtration.
