Evaluation of the concentration of asbestos fibres released into the ambient air of school buildings

Abstract

The IRSST undertook this study following a prevention initiative by the government of Quebec to evaluate the extent of asbestos exposure in schools. Its objectives were to obtain a significant number of samples from schools in which sprayed insulation was in the worst condition and establish the extent of insulation deterioration by measuring the concentration of airborne asbestos fibres. In all, 77 samples were obtained from classrooms, gymnasia, cafeterias and other areas in 17 schools. In the vast majority of cases, the concentration of airborne asbestos fibres was below the management threshold. However, the concentration of fibres was higher in some areas, such as gymnasia, in which activities favour contact with the materials. The results are summarized in a table.
