Abstract

Attempts to prevent isocyanate-induced occupational asthma invariably focus on automobile paint shops. In collaboration with the joint sector-based association concerned, the IRSST has already conducted two studies in this area, the first on the evaluation of isocyanate exposure levels and the second on the effectiveness of paint booths. To obtain a complete overview of isocyanate exposure levels in paint shops, however, it was necessary to document exposure at work stations located outside paint booths, especially the new ventilated “Prep Stations” used for the past few years in certain shops for paint application. The authors evaluated the potential exposure levels at the stations and the effectiveness of these stations in eliminating airborne contaminants. This publication documents the efficiency of preventive measures in this type of environment.
