A wide variety of protective devices to improve the safety of machines are available in North America, but there is little information regarding their use. This IRSST fact sheet presents some basic notions regarding the types of device most often used, as well as a summary of optimal operating conditions. In addition, a section discusses openings allowed in protective devices in order to keep workers out of dangerous areas.
