Development of a methodology to facilitate the integration of ergonomics and health and safety considerations into project design

Abstract

Several research projects have demonstrated that the integration of ergonomics considerations into project design can improve productivity as well as workers’ health and safety. In light of this, the Société d'Électrolyse et de Chimie Alcan Ltée. (SÉCAL) requested the IRSST’s help in improving its management of engineering projects.

Using data obtained from analysis of the projects and interviews with design managers, the following weaknesses were identified: imprecise health and safety objectives, inadequate use of available accident and operational data, and low predictive capacity. With these observations as starting points, reference situations and tools with which to analyse the current situation and simulate future activity were developed in collaboration with project designers and users.
