CSST pilot project on the implementation of participatory ergonomics groups to help reduce CTDs in the meat-processing sector

Abstract

The CSST's Chaudière-Appalache regional office has negotiated the participation of three slaughterhouses in a pilot project on the prevention of cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs). In each slaughterhouse, a participatory ergonomics group was created, group members adequately trained, and analytical and corrective methods for hazardous workstations developed in collaboration with the groups.Seven workstations were analysed over this period. Modifications designed to reduce CTD risk factors have implemented in three of these, and are underway in a further two. Although the research in one company ended prematurely due to significant changes there, the company has expressed interest in renewing its participation once its situation has stabilised. In two other slaughterhouses, the project continues with the support of the CSST inspector and the companies' consulting physicians. The approach developed is part of the CSST intervention programme on CTDs.
