Comparison of fibre-counting protocols: IRSST method 47-1 and NIOSH method 7400 Abstract The IRSST has been using IRSST method 47-1 since 1981 to quantify occupational exposure to airborne asbestos. This project was undertaken in order to assess the comparability of this method with NIOSH method 7400. The following aspects of both methods were compared: a) precision, as measured by the performance of 12 counters evaluating a series of laboratory samples, and b) accuracy, as measured by the results of the analysis of workplace samples. While the coefficients of variation of the two methods were comparable, the fibre concentration indicated by the NIOSH method was 45% less than that indicated by the IRSST method.
