Biosafety of odour-suppressing manure additives

Abstract

Manufacturers have developed manure additives that are supposed to be effective in reducing the intensity or emission of odours by eliminating the compounds responsible. This publication summarizes a project carried out by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the IRSST to evaluate four additives and to document scientifically their effects on the environment and health of workers. The results obtained using the developed methodology indicate that the additives tested for the manure storage period had no effect on the gases, physicochemical characteristics, odours and bioaerosols. Under certain conditions, a chemical neutralizer reduced the degradation of the volatile fatty acids and gaseous emissions of ammonia. However, the amount necessary was so large that it was considered economically unacceptable for commercial use.
