Biological monitoring in the workplace: review of potential applications of existing models and identification of model-related research needs Abstract Physiological-based pharmacokinetic modelling (PBPM) is a tool for the analysis of internal doses in target organs and the ongoing distribution of contaminants in the body. This modelling procedure takes into account the body's anatomy and physiology, anatomical, physiological, and pathological variations, and exposure conditions. It may be validated through clinical or experimental validation, and once validated, may be used to predict the result of other exposures. This modelling tool, developed over the last ten years, could have important applications in the biological monitoring of occupational exposure. In an attempt to identify possible applications, the project team will perform a critical literature review on the structure and sensitivity of simulation models and their application to biological monitoring. The extent to which PBPM can be used to interpret biological monitoring data and establish exposure limits will be assessed. The research will also identify research needs related to the development of simulation models which are suitable for biological monitoring applications.
