Analysis of the circumstances of accidents suffered by labourers and carpenters in the construction industry between 1980 and 1983

Abstract

This study identified typical accident scenarios for labourers and carpenters, using information from CSST (Commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail du Québec, Québec Occupational Health and Safety Commission) accident reports. The influence of the type of job and company on accidents, and the interaction effect of these two variables, was determined using a multidimensional analysis. A descriptive analysis of 3 835 accidents suffered by labourers and carpenters between 1980 and 1983 reveals significant differences in the accident scenarios of the two trades.

The approach used in this project can be used in more sophisticated studies of other sectorial or occupational groups, and possesses the added advantage of serving as a partial validation, for the purposes of prevention programs, of the information contained in the CSST files.
