Analysis of accidents at James Bay construction sites Abstract Large construction projects involve many workers and are the site of many accidents. This project was undertaken to collect and analyze available data on occupational accidents occurring at James Bay construction sites between 1976 and 1986. Data sources included files of the SEBJ (Société d'énergie de la Baie James, James Bay Energy Company), Hydro-Québec, the CSST (Commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail du Québec, Québec Occupational Health and Safety Commission), and contractors. The project evaluated the reliability of available data, as well as the manner in which it is recorded and its utility in identifying preventive measures likely to result in a reduction in accidents. Some factors responsible for accidents were also identified.Recommendations concerning improvements to the prevention programmes of future James Bay construction projects have been formulated and applied, and their effectiveness can be evaluated at a later date. The results of this study are largely applicable to other large construction sites..
