You can take action!
Before continuing the process, it is important, right from the overview stage, to identify the initiatives your organization may already have taken to prevent violence. Holding awareness-raising activities in the context of a prevention process can actually prove ineffective if they are not accompanied by structuring mechanisms (e.g. a prevention policy, a procedure for reporting violent events, victim support mechanisms) in the organization. To raise employees’ awareness of workplace violence, one must be ready to support and guide them in their questioning processes and initiatives, as the case may be.
TIP
Does your organization already have a violence prevention policy?
If so, it may be worthwhile to review (and rework, if need be) the policy and ensure that the mechanisms it provides for (e.g. complaint handling procedure, victim support mechanisms) are compliant with current legislation. For more information about implementing a violence prevention policy, you may wish to visit the Web site of the Commission des normes du travail. It provides a Model for preparing an enterprise policy in the field of psychological harassment.
