About the process
The basic principle underlying this process is that of equal participation and joint efforts by the employer, employees, and if applicable, their representatives, to help prevent workplace violence more effectively and improve the working atmosphere throughout the organization.
To ensure a complete, gradual, and well-planned process inspired by that carried out in the COs project, we propose the following:
5 STEPS
These steps can be carried out easily without demanding excessive time or resources. Sometimes a small change in how the work is organized can make a big difference.
However, the implementation of this process requires first and foremost securing a solid commitment from the workplace (Step 1), a crucial step without which it is difficult to take action and implement preventive measures. This first step allows your organization to move one step closer to eliminating violence and ensuring sustainable results.
The other steps can then be taken gradually, in keeping with your organization’s needs.
Depending on their own unique situations and how far along they are in their violence prevention initiatives, some organizations may prefer not to undertake the entire process. Instead, they may decide to retain only some of the suggestions or ideas proposed here, or to use the downloadable tools according to their needs, priorities, and available means. Organizations may also opt to use some of the evidence and the statistics provided in order to formulate compelling reasons that will raise awareness in their workplace of the issue of violence, its costs, and its impacts.
Examples of measures implemented in the COs project .
It is essential to remember that the basic principle underlying this process is its participatory approach. From the moment when employers and employees join forces to reflect and work together to prevent violence, a change in mentality occurs that is conducive to solving the problems, even if involves taking only one or two actions. These initiatives can create a new dynamic in the workplace that will benefit everyone―employees and employers alike―in both the medium and long terms.
. The benefits of partnership in the COs project.
The aim of the process is to raise organizational awareness of the issue of workplace violence and the importance of employees and employers within an organization firmly commiting to the cause and working together to prevent violence on a sustainable basis.
The process is also intended to equip interested organizations to:
Regardless, the process is designed to foster the empowerment of organizations to manage their own processes and preventive measures. The sustainability of the measures taken also depends largely on the organization’s involvement in the development and implementation of these preventive measures.
