Exploratory study on the practices of machine manufacturers in Quebec in connection with the integration of machine safety starting from the design phase

Abstract

A total of 3,552 workers were injured in machine-related accidents in Québec in 2010, according to the CNESST (Québec’s workplace safety and insurance board). Design shortcomings or inadequate modifications were the cause of many of these accidents.

In 2015, there were 858 companies listed as machine manufacturers in the business directory (Répertoire des entreprises du Québec) issued by CRIQ, Québec’s industrial research centre (Centre de recherche industrielle du Québec), and the majority of these companies sell their products locally.

The purpose of this exploratory study is to get a better understanding of the practices and needs of Québec’s machine manufacturers in connection with the safety of their products in order to prevent work accidents at the source.
