Development and implementation of a measurement system and a measurement protocol for quantifying the physical exposure of material handlers

Abstract

The IRSST has implemented a research program intended to improve handling training. Currently, an integrated prevention strategy for manual handling (IPSMH), which uses training to improve both working conditions and worker practices, is about to be implemented.

However, to gauge the effectiveness of onsite interventions, the physical exposure of material handlers must first be evaluated. Appropriate measuring instruments have been developed, but whether they effectively meet workplace requirements has yet to be assessed.

The purpose of this research is to develop and test a measurement system that will provide quantitative estimates of the physical exposure of material handlers and evaluate the effectiveness of prevention approaches.
The researchers will have a better understanding of the requirements of a handling task in actual working conditions and will evaluate the success of a prevention approach designed to reduce the physical exposure of workers.
