Knowledge review – Thermal and chemical stress

Abstract

Several studies have noted that the function of several organs is modified during exposure to thermal stress. As a result, the amounts of chemicals absorbed via the pulmonary and cutaneous routes during work in a hot environment can increase significantly due to the increase in pulmonary ventilation and blood flow in the skin. The noted reduction in renal blood flow can result in a decrease in the urinary excretion of the chemicals. Also, exposure to certain chemical substances can affect the thermoregulation mechanisms and thus reduce the workers' ability to adapt to thermal stress.
This project will document the impact of simultaneous exposure to thermal and chemical stress on the absorption, metabolism and toxicity of chemical substances found in the workplace
