Safety of plastic injection molding machines with peripheral equipment during maintenance and production interventions in companies

Abstract

The Québec plastics processing industry employs approximately 25,000 people. During maintenance and production interventions on plastic injection molding machines, workers are exposed to possible serious or fatal injuries. According to CSST investigation reports, accessible danger zones, unsafe work methods, a lack of lockout procedures for these machines, and hazardous peripheral equipment are some of the factors that cause accidents.

The researchers will analyze maintenance and production interventions on injection molding machines of different sizes and having peripheral equipment such as robots, conveyors, plastic granule feed systems, in order to evaluate the safety of workers who perform operations in the mold area. They will do a risk assessment and analyze the means of reducing the risks. The dissemination of the results will help companies in this sector to be better able to make their plastic injection molding machines with peripheral equipment safe.
